Bios - The background

Letham Sports Club is an umbrella body created by Letham FC in June 2002. The main football section of the Club will retain the well-known and respected title of Letham Football Club. Other football clubs and other clubs in the community, whilst retaining their own individual identity, can be affiliated to Letham Sports Club in the future. As Letham FC is an integral component of Letham Sports Club the history is all related to the football club. From November 2008 the umbrella body changed the name to Letham Community Sports Club. The Community Sports Club hope to have achieved Charitable Status confirmed late 2008 or early 2009.

Four teenagers formed Letham Football Club in November 1960. They were Messrs Drummond, Hebner, Lee and Pritchard. Apart from one, none of the other founder members actually resided in Letham but this was the era of Rock n’ Roll so they frequented the Washington Café in Rannoch Road to listen to the Juke Box and play Elvis records. The reason was that the then City Boy League (under 18) had folded and they knew lots of boys who were looking for a game.

Trials and friendly matches were organised and they entered the Perthshire Juvenile Football Association for Season 1961/62 as Letham Juveniles. By season 1964/65 the Club had added a City Boys team (under 18) and a Minors team (under 16). The 1980’s resulted in real growth and ran successful teams starting at under 12’s. Over the years we are proud of our record of over 70 young boys being signed by Senior Professional Clubs. Jake Finlay as a goalkeeper with Aston villa and Derek Rylance scored a hat-trick whilst playing for Arbroath against Celtic.

Lack of funds and drive from the management together with the restructuring of local leagues in the early 1990’s led to the demise of all Letham teams. In 1997 the Club through the efforts of Bob Deuchar and Alan Ferguson resurrected the Club and commenced playing as Letham Amateurs in the Third Division of the Perthshire Amateur League. Progress has been swift and by the year 2001 had elevated itself to the First Division having twice been promoted as Champions. Letham has now established itself as a leading club in the Amateur Association having won every local trophy.

The Executive was determined to re-establish Letham FC as the premier youth football club not only in the immediate community but also in the area of Perth & District. Such has been the need together with the reputation of “The Tangerines” that the Club has been overwhelmed by the response from boys and girls wishing to play and participate in the club’s activities. So much so, that it appears for the coming season we will field an incredible 15 teams. This, of course, has put tremendous pressure on our resources not only financial but in providing suitable coaches and administrative personnel.

The history section at the moment refers to the early years but we are steadily researching the later years in order to compile a complete history as well as naming as many former players as possible. Alas, this task is very time consuming and is taking far longer than anticipated.

In order to understand this section you should be aware that whilst each age group was named according to the association or age group it was a member of the overall structure was Letham Football Club and each team’s registered colours were Tangerine and White

Letham Juveniles were members of the Perthshire Juvenile F.A. Letham City Boys (under 18’s) were members of the Perth & District City Boys F.A. likewise Letham Minors (under 16’s) were members of the Perthshire Minor F.A. In the early years from time to time we had teams named Letham Mini Minors or Letham Imps (under 14’s) who were not members of an association but played friendly matches normally against Boys Brigade teams. They were designed to be the nursery team for the under 16’s.

All these names are part of the rich history of the club and Letham Football Club now operates as Letham Amateurs,Letham Lads,  14 youth teams and 2 Girls teams all appertaining to their age groupings. Teams start at under 9’s and at each age level are differentiated by colour (Tangerine, White and now Sky Blue) e.g. Letham U12’s (Tangerine), Letham U12’s (White), Letham U12's (Sky Blue).
