Secretary and Committee Tom McEwan
Today sees the official opening of the Perth Minors League as affiliate members of the Scottish Secondary Juveniles FA with the first league matches for Season 1968/69 on the card.
The Minors have been in abeyance for a number of years now but due mainly to the activity of Mr David Lindsay, who now runs Letham City Boys. An unofficial league operated last season.
The Minor League caters for boys under 16 years old and the clubs competing this season will be Tayside, Perth City Boys Club, and Letham who all operated last year plus newcomers Murray Royal, Inchhead Athletic, and Roselea.
A late application from Pitcairn is also under consideration.
Hon. President Mr David Lindsay (Letham)
Chairman & Match Secretary Mr Magnus Wylie (Roselea)
League Secretary & Treasurer Mr A Duff (Tayside)

Team from: Findlay, Sinclair, Mason, Whytock, Martin, Ross, McDiarmid, Brown, Robertson, Jenkins, Sievewright, Black, Turnbull, Falconer.
PCBC 0 - Letham 14
Two high scoring matches reflect an obvious disparity between some of the teams in the league. Boys Club are unfortunate in that practically all of last seasons Championship winning team have gone either to the ranks of the City Boys or to other Minor teams and consequently Dave Sime has a problem on his hands trying to replace his team. According to reports however they will improve on Saturday's performance.
Murray Royal have dropped out of the Association.
Trial game off for Perth Select purposes.

Letham U16 v Tayside (League - Away)
Tayside 1 - Letham 3
As expected the game on the North Inch provided a very close result after a hard tussle. Down 0-2 at half time, Tayside were unfortunate to lose two goals through defensive lapses and did well to keep level pegging in the second half.
Although stand-in keeper David Cochrane is more than useful in this position. Tayside will be glad to have his services in midfield again when regular goalkeeper Graham Steele returns. All credit, however to a very good Letham side which took the chances going their way.

Letham U16 V Roselea (League - Home)
Team from: Findlay, Sinclair, Mason, Black, Whytock, Reid, Ferguson, Falconer, Robertson, Turnbull, Brown, Jenkins, McDiarmid.
The pick of Saturday's matches must be the clash between joint leaders Letham and Roselea. Both teams play fast attractive football and have found goalscoring easy so far. The 'Lea have now lost another two promising youngsters this time stepping up to the City Boys League. This should give some of their mini-minors a chance to show their worth.
Letham 4 - Roselea 5
As expected the encounter between Letham and Roselea provided a close fought match, which was notable for end-to-end play and see-sawing of fortunes.
Letham made a good start with a well-taken goal in the opening minutes and increased their score a few minutes later but the Roselea boys were rewarded for their perseverance by reversing the lead at half-time 3-2.
Letham then went all out in the second half and deservedly scored another two to regain the lead. The 'Lea were not to be denied however and their never say die spirit brought them from behind to finish just in front and yet Letham were denied a last minute equaliser when keeper Blyth brought off a superlative save for a high shot to push it over the bar.
All in all a draw would have been a fair result between these two teams. They meet again in the same section of the League Cup and this should be a cracker to watch.

Letham U16 v PCBC (League - Away)
Stanley and Glemcarse have made late applications to join the Association. Stanley to play at Murthly Hospital and Glencarse in Perth.
Letham U16 v Roselea (League - Cup)
Another thrilling and entertaining match is in prospect between Letham and Roselea, who meet again on the South Inch, this time in League Cup business.
Letham 5 - Roselea 5
Both Letham and Roselea had to make last minute changes, the former having to field a stopgap keeper in place of Jake Findlay, while Roselea had to re-shuffle to allow one of their 12 year olds take the place of Norman Bayne, off with a foot injury. Letham got off to a good start as usual and led 3-1 at half-time.
Midway through the second half a strangely dispirited looking 'Lea were trailing 5-1 and to all intents and purposes down and out.
Suddenly they came to life and fought back with a last ditch burst worthy of the best Celtic traditions to preserve their unbeaten record with mere seconds to spare.

Letham U16 v Roselea (1st Rd. Douglas Blackley Cup - Away) (Scottish)
Match postponed due to water-logged pitch.
Letham U16 v Roselea (1st Rd. Douglas Blackley Cup - Away)
Today's encounter between Roselea and Letham goes on at Murray Royal. Another close game is anticipated here.
Due to schoolboy representative matches the 'Lea have been missing the services of keeper Jimmy Blyth from time to time, but a capable deputy has been signed up in Alan Gordon to take Jimmy's place between the sticks when he is away in these matches.
Roselea 4 - Letham 3
The game at Murray Royal provided a narrow win for the homesters after a real cup-tie endeavour.
Letham got off to their customary goal start within the first minute with a picture header from a right wing cross.
Roselea's equaliser was made fortuitous due to a pause by the Letham defence occasioned by the sound of an umpires whistle from a neighbouring hockey match. End to end play saw both keepers bring off some cracking saves.
Shot of the match came just on the interval from outside box by young Alex Grimmond of the 'Lea. The Letham keeper Jake Findlay thwarted him with what must have been the save of the match.
Resuming after the interval at 2-2, the reds made a quick 1-2 only to have their lead reduced by another perfectly timed header, almost a replica of the first goal. Alan Gordon proved to be more than a stopgap keeper and saved the day with a wonderfully instinctive parry over the bar from a fierce point blank shot. In the end Roselea were glad to hold on to their narrow lead in face of mounting pressure.
Letham U16 v Pitcairn (League - Home)
Team from: Findlay, Sinclair, Mason, Black, McLaren, Whytock, Reid, Brown, Ferguson, Robertson, Turnbull, Jenkins, Sievewright, Falconer.
Letham will be anxious to maintain their challenge and will need both points at Pitcairn to keep in the Championship race. The strong going Pitcairn boys will put them on their mettle however and a close result is expected.
Letham 8 - Pitcairn 1
Letham kept themselves in the league race with an unexpectedly comfortable victory over a Pitcairn side whose form of late has been erratic.

Letham U16 - v Roselea (League Cup - Away)
Roselea and Letham are still neck and neck in their league cup section. The winner of today's tie will probably be the finalist, while a draw in all likelihood means a play off. This is their fourth encounter and with previous results being 5-5. 4-3, 5-4 in Roselea favour, Letham must be hoping that their luck will turn today. The 'Lea are taking the opportunity of blooding yet another of their Mini Minors, Arthur Hughes taking over at left back.
Roselea 2 - Letham 4
Letham became the first team to lower Roselea's colours this season with a well deserved win at Seven Acres. They led 2-1 at the interval and as the 'Lea were now shooting downhill the margin seemed too slender.
However it was THE Tangerines who looked more dangerous in the second half and it was only due to stalwart defensive play by Jimmy Blyth who brought off some tremendous saves from point blank range and by centre-half Ian Gardiner that the score was kept down.
After losing a third goal from a penalty it was 'Lea's turn to be "on the spot", but Jack Findlay brought off the save of the match in stopping the luckless Cowie's penalty kick. The Letham defence found it easy to cope with a forward line which just didn't exist now and it took a long ranger from right-back Mike Cairns to give Roselea a second goal just before full time to put a better complexion on the score after Alan Sievewright had sewn up the match with a beautiful first-time shot from the wing.

Letham U16 v Stanley/Murthly (League Cup - Away)
For the visit to Murthly, Letham will be minus Ewan Turnbull (He missed last weeks clash with Roselea also) who has been in hospital after having swallowed an open safety pin.
Roselea will be waiting eagerly to hear the result since Letham must drop two points to leave them in with a chance. If that is not pressure reporting by Magnus Wylie then I do not know what is. Magnus of course was the Manager of Roselea and he did the press reports. Understandingly that he favoured Roselea and did not show any impartiality.
Stanley/Murthly 1 - Letham 1
Stanley/Murthly set the cat among the pigeons in Section 1 of the League Cup by holding section leaders Letham to a draw. Reports say that although Letham were the better team opening the scoring after a few minutes with a picture goal headed in after a lovely cross. The home lads missed three chances to score with only the keeper to beat. Ian Cameron scored the vital equaliser with only 15 minutes to go.
This result means that everything hinges on Stanley/Murthly last three matches and provides the setting for a real thriller at Murthly this Saturday where Roselea take up the challenge again.
Who ever wins this match will figure in a "Photo Finish" with Letham who must still be slight favourites to win the section having home advantage in their return fixture the Murthly lads, who should account for the BOYS CLUB at home in their last match.

Letham U16 v Stanley/Murthly (League Cup)
Letham 7 - Stanley/Murthly 2
Final result not yet to hand. It is known that Letham beat Stanley/Murthly to clinch their place in the final of the St Johnstone YM League Cup.
Due to an unfortunate misunderstanding about the playability of the Inch pitches, Stanley/Murthly were forced to take the field with only nine players. Despite this handicap they managed to hold the Tangerines to a 3-0 lead at the interval and managed to be dangerous enough to score a good goal and miss one or two chances in the second half.

Team from: Findlay, Sinclair, Mason, Black, Whytock, Reid, Sievewright, Falconer, Robertson, Turnbull, Jenkins, McLaren, Brown.

Letham 3 - Pitfour 1
Weather conditions hit Saturday's fixtures and in a game where the wind and underfoot conditions did not lend themselves to good football. Letham left it late in overcoming a sturdy Pitfour side, whom seemed to be holding out for a point when John Robertson scored a great goal only five minutes from the end. Ewan Turnbull then clinched the match with another goal just before time.

Letham U16 v Roselea (League - Away)
Roselea and Letham meet for the last time this season in a match that is vital to both, with Tayside and Stanley/Murthly beginning to breathe down their necks. There could be a session of dog eat dog before the championship is settled however as 'Lea and Letham have to face Tayside again while all three must do league business with Stanley/Murthly.
Roselea 2 - Letham 4
Roselea suffered their first league defeat, going down to a much livelier looking Letham team. This makes the top of the table a very close affair indeed with the possibility of a play-off between two or even three teams becoming more likely since goal average will not be a deciding factor.

Stanley/Murthly 3 - Letham 2
Letham's defeat at Stanley makes them outsiders in the title race but their remaining fixtures being against Tayside and Stanley/Murthly they can still make it a photo finish. The Tangerines were perhaps a shade unfortunate to lose as they played the better football but all credit goes to the country lads for their endeavour. This defeat was a bitter blow to the team as there was now no chance of winning the league championship.
Again as was normal when playing Stanley at any level the team was intimidated not only by the opposition but also by the vociferous home support.

The Perth defence emerged with most of the credit. Left-back Mason of Letham being the outstanding player in the team.
Only an opinion but in my view Jake Findlay was an outstanding goalkeeper and better than Jimmy Blyth. Likewise Ross Jenkins was not selected either and he was without doubt the most accomplished winger in the league.
Letham U16 v Tayside (Final - League Cup)
Tayside 7 - Letham 0
Tayside gained their second trophy of the season rather easily against Letham after being gifted two early goals. Both teams were under strength but it was Tayside who provided most of the rhythm and combined play. Letham tried hard but it was obvious just not their night. Apart from flashes from Ross Jenkins there was little threat to the Tayside defence.

On reflection that was the season that got away. League defeats at Pitfour and Stanley were very costly. On our day Letham was as good as any other team.
Jake Findlay and Ross Jenkins were outstanding young talent. Tich Whytock was following in his older brothers Alex footsteps. The Whytock family would in time be great assets to the Letham club at most levels.
We were going to lose Tom McEwan to H M Customs and he would be missed.
Especially as we had great difficulty in finding the right replacement. This meant that we lost to other clubs what should have been a nucleus of another good side.
