Juveniles Season 1963/1964

Saturday, 13th, July, 1963

Letham did not attend meeting and were fined as per rule. They did however receive £6.00 for winning the League Championship. £3.00 each was also awarded for winning the Dewar Shield and the Lindsay Cup. plus £1-10/- for being runners up in the Bisset & Stewart Cup.

New teams admitted to the League were R N Anchorage, Letham Rovers, Earnside, I E S , Caputh United,
Perth Youth Centre and Pitfour making 15 clubs in membership.

Ken Drummond took over from Tom Peterson as team manager. Tom had been ideal for the first two seasons as he acted as the father figure to the young but very inexperienced officials like Ken and Bill Hebner. Regrettably due to his other commitments, Tom was unable to give the position the time and dedication that was required. Ron McClelland then took over the secretarial duties. Bill Hebner of course remained in charge of finances. The other founding members like Syd Lee could no longer hold down a position in the team, mainly due to his marital status and becoming a father. Trevor Pritchard likewise which was a great pity because Trevor was a very talented footballer but was unfortunate that the emerging talent being drawn to the club were just a shade better.

The club were disappointed that Dave Galloway without advice signed junior forms with Perth Celtic. This as Dave had been a regular in the side since the club was formed. His loss would be considerable as he was a magnificent left footed player who could score goals.

Wednesday, 14th, August, 1963 V Pitfour-( League Away)

League Champions Letham travel to Glencarse tonight to open the new pitch of Pitfour Juveniles. The locals will see a good side, which should be too smart for the homesters.
Team- Murray, McClelland and Clement, Crockart, Hebner and Watson, Muckersie, Marshall, Campbell, Moir, McRorie.

Pitfour 0    Letham  2

Pitfour, also newcomers, at home to the league champions, put up quite a good show but experience told in the end.
Saturday, 17th, August, 1963 V St. Leonard’s – (League-Home )

Letham and St. Leonard’s also meet on the South Inch. Saints after their 12-0 win on Tuesday ( against Letham Rovers) will have their tails up. I think they would have been better to have kept 2 or 3 goals aside for this game, as I cannot see them stopping the champions.
Team- Murray, McClelland and Clement, Crockart, Hebner and Watson forwards from- Muckersie, Marshall, McRorie, Moir, Campbell, Gardiner and McErlain
Players meet at the abattoir at 2.25p.m.

Match was not played as no pitch available

The club were unable at this time to secure premises for changing. We were forced to use the garage belonging to the parents of Sandy Crockart who resided in Shore Road.
Referee fees were set at 17/- plus travel expenses. 0.85 pence in today’s money.

Tuesday, 20th, August, 1963  V Allanvale  ( League- Away)

Old rivals meet at Blackford and both sides would be pleased with a point.

Allanvale   7  Letham  2

Letham ran in to unfortunate trouble at Blackford. They lost their right-half ( Sandy Crockart ) after 20 minutes play with a cut head. They also missed two penalties. The visitors held their own until the last 15 minutes from which point the home side scored another three.

Sandy was taken to the cottage hospital at Auchterarder and was then transferred to Perth Royal Infirmary. Whilst the injury was nasty it was not serious. Ken Drummond caused anxiety with Sandy’s mother when he tried to explain what had happened. She understandably did not believe the statement that Sandy had received a head injury but “ he is all right”

Saturday, 24th, August, 1963 V Caputh United ( League-Away )

Letham look good for both points

Team- Barclay, McClelland and Clement, Newman, Hebner and Watson, McErlain, Marshall, Gardiner, McRorie, Moir and Campbell
Result   Caputh United   2  Letham  12
Ian Rodger, the ex St. Johnstone centre forward appeared at this game. It transpired he was on a scouting mission for the Saints with a particular interest in Sandy McRorie.

Tuesday, 27th, August, 1963  ( League- Away )

R N will be all out to keep their full points record, but they will be fully tested by the Letham boys, providing they can field a full strength side.

R N Anchorage  4   Letham  3

Saturday, 31st, August, 1963 V St John’s YC  ( League- Home )

The meeting of Letham and St John’s looks the game of the day with slight odds on last season’s champions.

Team- Barclay, McClelland and Clement, Crockart, Hebner and Watson, Forwards from- Marshall, McRorie, Moir, Campbell, Fairlie and McErlain

Result   Letham   1  St John’s YC  2

Letham last season’s champions had to admit their third defeat and the hands of the young St John’s YC side, which on present form will make a few teams, sit up.

Saturday, 7th, September, 1963  V  PYC ( 1st. Rd. Brotherhood Cup – Away )

Letham should advance with something to spare against PYC.

Team- Barclay, McClelland and Clement, Crockart, Hebner and Watson, forwards- McErlain, Marshall, Gardiner, McRorie, Moir and Campbell.

Result   PYC  1  Letham  7

PYC kept their goal intact for half an hour, but after that Letham settled down and goals came easily.

Saturday, 14th, September, 1963  V Caputh United ( 1st. Rd. Lindsay Cup – Away )

Letham should have an easy passage at Caputh.

Team—Barclay, McClelland and Clement, Marshall, Crockart and Watson, McErlain, Moir, Gardiner, McRorie and Muckersie

Result   Caputh United  0  Letham  9

Letham had an overwhelming victory

Saturday, 21st, September, 1963  V Ruthvenvale  ( League-Home )

Letham look good for two easy points

Team- Barclay, McClelland and Clement, Marshall, Crockart and Watson, McErlain, Moir, Gardiner, McRorie and Campbell.

Result  Letham  15  Ruthvenvale  0

Letham had a record score over Ruthvenvale

Saturday, 28th, September, 1963 V Allanvale  ( League Home )

There was no forecast

Result   Letham  5  Allanvale  0

The Blackford side undefeated record was blown sky high when they met last season’s league champions Letham. Allan, an Allanvale player was ordered off.

Saturday, 5th, October, 1963  V Vale of Earn ( 1st. Rd. Scottish Cup – Away )

The tie of the day should be at Crieff where Letham are the visitors. Both sides have struck good form and a forecast will be difficult. Home advantage will perhaps tell here.

Team- Barclay, McClelland and Clements, Marshall, Crockart and Watson, McErlain, Moir, Gardiner,  Muckersie and Campbell.

Result   Vale of  Earn  4   Letham  1

Vale of Earn go marching in to the second round at the expense of Letham who were expected to put up a better show

Sandy McRorie, who was still only 17 years old, signed for St. Johnstone. Negotiations with their then manager Bobby Brown resulted in a fee of £25.00 pounds plus another £5.00 pounds as at that time we were still in the Scottish Cup. Plus a tatty old football. Sandy was the very first Letham player to go Senior.  Because of the stupid rules at that time, Sandy had to sign junior forms with Jeanfield Swifts.
His first match was for Saints reserves against Grandtully Vale in the Perthshire Cup semi final. He scores two goals

Extract from Strathearn Herald
Vale of Earn go marching into the 2nd. Round of the Scottish Cup at the expense of Letham who were expected to put up a better show. The Crieff boys piled on the pressure right from the start but despite near misses, all the goals came in the second half. Scorers for Vale were Brock (2) Taylor & Strachan.

Saturday, 12th, October, 1963 V St Leonard’s ( 1st, Rd, Bissett & Stewart Cup Away )

St Leonard’s meet Letham on the South Inch. Both sides were well and truly beaten last week. Only previous form looks as if it counts and I take the ” TANGERINE” lads to make it to the second round.

This was the first time the nickname “ The Tangerines “ was used.

Team- Barclay, McClelland and Clement, Marshall, Crockart, Watson, McErlain, Hill, Gardiner, Moir and Muckersie.

Result   St Leonard’s  0  Letham  3

Kenny Marshall scored a wonderful individual goal when he ran from inside his own half beating man after man and then walked round the St Leonard’s goalkeeper and put the ball in the net. So impressive was his dribbling skills that an on looker told St. Johnstone who were alerted to his ability and then made approaches to sign him. Ken Drummond was summoned to meet Bobby Brown on a Sunday morning at Muirton Park. Negotiations were better and we got £50.00. Andy McCall an ex well known senior player with Dundee and St Johnstone tried to sign him for Dundee but he was all ways too late

Saturday, 19th, October,1963  V St Leonard’s  ( 2nd, Rd. Brotherhood Cup  Home )

Letham after their 3-0 win over St. Leonard’s last week should advance to the next stage in their return meeting.

Result   Letham  5  St Leonard’s  1

Letham finished easy winners over St Leonard’s who were a man short.

Saturday, 26th, October, 1963  V R N Anchorage  ( League Home )

On the South Inch the meeting of Letham and R N Anchorage will be an all out effort by both sides as they meet next week in a cup tie. R N have all ready taken two points from Letham and will be all out for the double. A forecast here would be pure guesswork as the result could go either way perhaps by the odd goal.

Result   Letham  2  R N Anchorage  2

The meeting of Letham and R N was a grand game with a draw a true result

Saturday, 2nd, November, 1963  V R N Anchorage ( 2nd, Rd. Lindsay Cup  Home )

The meeting of Letham and R N Anchorage should prove a real thriller and after last weeks draw in the league anything could happen. An odd goal result looks to be the forecast.

Team- Barclay, McClelland and Clement, Marshall, Hebner and Crockart, forwards from- McErlain, Moir, Gardiner, Hill, Muckersie and Campbell

Result   Letham   1  R N Anchorage  4

R N had a well deserved win over Letham whose forwards missed many chances in the first half hour and found themselves 2-0 down at the interval. R N took command on the restart and finished good winners.

Saturday, 9th, November, 1963 V  I E S  ( League Home )

Letham look good for both points at the expense of  I E S.

Team- Barclay, McClelland and Clement, Marshall, Hebner and Watson, Forwards from McErlain, Moir, Gardiner, Muckersie, Hill and Campbell

Result   Letham  3  I E S   3

I E S are still showing the scoring touch and were a just a bit unlucky not to get both points from Letham.  I E S at one time led 2-0 and it looked odds on them taking the points but in the end they had to be content with a divide

Marshall ( Letham )
Munro ( Royal Utd ) and Halkett ( St John’s YC ) Morton ( Royal Utd ), Crawford ( Royal Utd ),
 Lennon ( Royal Utd ), Moir ( Letham ), Thomson ( Royal Utd )
Reserves to travel—Barclay ( Letham ), Bruce ( St John’s YC ), Watson ( Letham ),
Zeiba ( RN Anchorage), Binnie ( Letham Rovers ) and Hunter ( St John’s YC )

Saturday, 16th, November, 1963  V  Vale of Earn ( League – Away )

At Crieff where Letham are visiting, there should be a grand sporting game. The visitors have just not been getting the best of luck recently and a goal either way could settle the issue.

Team from-- Barclay, McClelland, Clement, Crockart, Marshall, Hebner, Watson, McErlain, Moir, Gardiner, Hill, Muckersie and Campbell

Result   Vale of Earn  2  Letham  1

Letham returned empty handed from Crieff where the home side got through by the odd goal. Reports say the visitors deserved at least a point.

Saturday, 23rd, November, 1963  V  PYC ( League Away )

Letham should pick up two easy points at the expense of PYC.

Result   PYC  1  Letham  6

PYC put up a splendid display against Letham and did not deserve to be down at half time. Experience told in the second half

Saturday, 30th, November, 1963  V  Letham Rovers ( 1st. Rd. Cunningham Cup  Home )

The Letham derby should be a real tit-bit. Rovers are holding their own meantime and will be all out to upset their more experienced foes but on form the South Inch lads should make the second round.

Result   Letham  2   Letham Rovers  4

Well played Rovers—In the long awaited Letham derby the visitors had a well-deserved win. Up to the last five minutes they led 4-0 but the home side hit back to reduce the leeway. Both keepers had to take off their sweaters at the same time, about 15 minutes from the end owing to injury. Both played out the game in the forward line. The Juveniles are certainly missing their transferred stars.  Kenny Marshall to St. Johnstone. He became the second Letham player to go Senior and Ian ( Spud ) Watson to Kinnoull Juniors.

Wednesday, 4th, December, 1963

Letham have new stripping accommodation at 64 Victoria Street, Perth. This was condemned property comprising of one small room and a very small back room with a sink. We put in bench seats and hooks on the wall to hang clothes. We also had an old table plus a notice board that Ali McAdam and Ken Drummond bought for £5.00 from Scottish Gas. It must have been quite a sight as the two of them carried this very large board from the offices at Friarton, round by the Prison and through the South Inch to Victoria Street. We also had a very attractive and modern curtain, which was displayed, on the street window just to keep out prying eyes.

Saturday, 7th, December, 1963

This was the trial match against Fifeshire at Central Park, Cowdenbeath. Perthshire winning 3-0.
Kenny Marshall now with St. Johnstone and Ian Watson with Kinnoull were both ineligible to play

Saturday, 14th, December, 1963  V  Co. Angus  ( League  Home )

Letham have the hard-hitting Coupar side on the South Inch and this should be a grand encounter with both teams glad to get a point
Team- Barclay, McClelland and Clement, Crichton, Hebner and Crockart, forwards from McErlain, Moir, Gardiner, Muckersie, Hill and Campbell

Result   Letham  1   Coupar Angus  0
Saturday, 14th, December, 1963

Dave Galloway now with Perth Celtic played for St Johnstone’s reserves against Kilmarnock reserves. They lost 8-0.

Saturday, 21st, December, 1963  V IES ( 2nd. Rd, Bissett & Stewart Cup—Home )

Letham face IES who are at present playing very well and it would be no surprise if a replay were required.

Team- Barclay, McClelland and Clement, Crichton, Hebner and Crockart forwards from- McErlain, Moir, Gardiner, Hill, Muckersie and Campbell.

Result   Letham   0   IES  3

Letham met the happy go lucky IES and went down by three clear goals.

Dave Galloway again played for St Johnstone’s reserves this time against Rangers at Muirton Park They lost by 2-0. Interesting result at Ibrox where Saints beat Rangers by 3-2 and a certain Mr Alex Ferguson got all three goals for Saints.

Saturday, 28th, December, 1963  V  St Leonard’s ( League  Away)

Game not played due to ground conditions.

IES are making things hot in more ways than one. Letham whom they beat in a cup-tie last week for playing an ineligible player has lodged another protest against them. This is the third protest them this season. They were severely warned the first time. Since then Pitfour and now Letham have protested. A hearing will be heard at the meeting on Sunday, 12th, January, 1964

Saturday 4th, January, 1964  V  Earnside ( League—Home)

Letham entertain unlucky Earnside and they will have to be on better shooting form to get the points. This game could go either way.

Team from- Barclay, McClelland, Paterson, Clement, Crichton Hebner, Campbell, McErlain, Muckersie,Newman, Gardiner, Hill and McClelland

Letham  2  Earnside  2

Earnside who have been playing good football these past few weeks got a point from Letham, whose form something will have to be done about. Granted they had changes including 3 trialists but the form they have been showing in the last few games has been too bad and they will have to pull their socks up if they are to be in the honours list.
As we now had a City Boy team we were able to draft in the promising young players without penalty. One of these youngsters was Brian, younger brother of Ron McClelland. Also Marek Zeiba who was playing for Kinnoull City Boys, his older brother was playing with R N Anchorage

Saturday, 11th, January, 1964  V  Letham Rovers ( League- Home )

The Letham “ derby “ should be worth witnessing. The Rovers, in their first season, had a grand win in a cup-tie and will be all out to prove the result was no fluke. This looks a good treble chance.

Team- Barclay, Paterson &Crockart, Crichton, Clement and Campbell, McErlain, Wilkie, Muckersie, Hill & McClelland. Reserve Gardiner

Letham  5  Letham Rovers  3

The Letham derby ended with the city side getting both points in a great tussle. The Rovers had bad luck at times and they finished with only 9 men. Their centre forward Gow received a severe ankle injury and was removed to PRI then transferred to Bridge of Earn Hospital. Also forced to go off with a leg injury was keeper Gardiner.

Saturday, 18th, January, 1964  V  St. Leonard’s ( League- away )

Old rivals Saints and Letham meet on pitch 7. Letham are likely to have out their young side and they look too good for the blues

Team- Barclay, Paterson & Crockart, Crichton, Clement and Campbell, McErlain, Wilkie, Muckersie, Gardiner and McClelland.

St Leonard’s  0  Letham  8

The score speaks for itself in the defeat of St. Leonard’s

It was thought that St. Leonard’s would cease at the end of the season due to lack of officials.

Headline in the PA: - Former Perth Juvenile does well for Saint’s Reserves

The star of the home forward line was17 year old Kenny Marshall signed recently from Letham Juveniles. He took a good goal, showed lots of nerve and initiative. Sandy McRorie also played in a 3-1 win over Queen of the South and also scored.

Letham’s claim that IES played a cup-tied junior in their 2nd. Rd. Bissett & Stewart cup-tie on the South Inch was upheld. Letham were awarded the tie and IES fined £1.00.
Peter Reid the association secretary relayed the information re this player to us. It only goes to prove that whilst he all ways covered himself in his forecasts and reports of matches that he did have a soft spot for Letham although we did not appreciate this at the time.

Saturday, 25th, January, 1964  V  Royal United  (  League Away pitch 8 )
Royals meet old rivals Letham and this should be a tiptop encounter.

Royal United   3   Letham   1

Royals had a great win over Letham. Both sides played grand football but Royals had the strength. Matt Ure, Royals new centre forward from St. Leonard’s led his team in fine style and put them in the lead with a low drive. Trialist Pillinger made a good opening to cross and Crawford scored from close in to give Royals a two goal lead at half-time. The second half was fairly even but Thomson put Royals three ahead before McErlain reduced the leeway. The outstanding player afield was Royals centre half Munro, closely followed by Campbell, left half of Letham

Saturday, 1st, February, 1964  V  Letham Rovers  ( League Away )

Letham Rovers   1  Letham  3

The Letham “derby” at Huntingtower, resulted in a good win for the Juveniles, who completed a double over Rovers
Saturday, 8th, February, 1964  V  Caputh Utd ( 1st Rd Gillie Cup  Home )

Letham look too good for Caputh.

Team- Newman, Paterson & Clement, Crichton, Crockart and Campbell, forwards from- McErlain, Hill, Muckersie, Moir, Wilkie, McClelland

Letham  4  Caputh United  0

Letham had a clean-cut win over Caputh

The Newman goalkeeper I think was  Bob Purvis who was an Amateur player who turned out for us in an emergency.

Saturday, 15th, February, 19645  V  St Johns YC ( 1st. Rd. Dewar Shield Home )

Letham and St Johns should also figure in a lively encounter with the odds slightly in favour of the             “ Tangerines “

Team- Berwick, Paterson & Clement, Crichton, Crockart & Campbell, McClelland, Hill, Muckersie, Moir & McClelland     Reserve  Wilkie

Letham   2  St Johns YC  1

Letham just got through by the odd goal

The name of Berwick I believe was a misread by the PA for Barclay.

Interest --  Richard McIntosh of Earnside suspended for 3 months for 2 ordering off offences.

Saturday, 22nd, February, 1964  V Royal Utd ( League Home pitch 8 )

Old rivals Letham and Royals meet on the South Inch and this looks the fixture of the day. The result could go either way but on present form the Reds can land both points.

Letham   0  Royal United  3

Thomson (Royal United ) was booked in the league derby on the South Inch, where his team completed the double against their rivals.

Saturday, 29th, February, 1964 V Co. Angus  (  League Away )

Letham travel to Coupar Angus where they find their hosts a hot handful. They will put up a stout show of course but the home side looks good for both points.

Coupar Angus  1   Letham  1

Letham were unlucky not to come away with both points at Coupar Angus. The home side snatched a point from a non-scoring free kick inside the box. The visitor’s keeper handling the ball then letting it through. He would have done well to leave it completely alone.

Interests—Trevor Pritchard one of the founding fathers was married to Sarah Lawson in the Perth Registry Office

Saint’s reserves lost 6-5 at Dunfermline. Young Kenny Marshall a consistent goal getter is rapidly enhancing his first team chances.

Saturday, 7th, March, 1964  V  PYC ( League Away Pitch

Letham should be too good for PYC.

Team—Duncan, Paterson & Clement, Crichton, Marnoch and Campbell, McClelland, Hill, Muckersie or Zieba, Moir and McErlain

PYC  0   Letham  3

PYC displayed good football against Letham but sadly lacked a general up front. Their centre forward looked the part but lacked support. Letham’s experience told and they scored a convincing win.

We signed Ian ( Ion ) Marnoch from IES as a replacement for Bill Hebner. Sadly he was unable to fill Bill’s centre half position and he went back to IES who next season became Roselea and for whom he found his niche. Bill Hebner a superb player and captain of the side since it’s inception in 1960 was having fearful back problems and was forced to give up the game.

Saturday, 14th, March, 1964  V  St Johns YC ( 2nd. Rd Gillie Cup Home )

Letham also in form should make it against St Johns.

Match postponed due to ground conditions. Pitch waterlogged plus wind and rain

Saturday, 14th, March, 1964, Jimmy Gardiner for so long a regular at centre forward marries Hazel Adam in Letham Kirk. Jimmy who now worked and about to live in Edinburgh was at the end of his career with Letham. He was to be missed because his strength and experience greatly helped the young lads along side him.

Saturday, 21st, March,1964  V  IES  ( 2nd. Rd. Dewar Shield Away Pitch 10 )

The South Inch derby should be a real thriller and it may require another meeting to decide the semi-finalists.

Match postponed due to ground conditions

Saturday, 28th, March, 1964  Free Day

Saturday, 4th, April,1964  V Allanvale ( Semi-final Brotherhood Cup  Away)

The Allanvale and Letham semi-final should be the outstanding tie of the day. Form points to the Blackford boys making the final but if the Perth lads can field a full strength team they will make the home side go the full 90 minutes.
Team from- Barclay, Paterson, Clement, Crichton, Crockart, Campbell, McErlain, McClelland, Hill, Muckersie, Moir and Wilkie.

Allanvale  4   Letham  1

Allanvale are high and dry in the final with a good win over Letham at Blackford. The score speaks for itself.

Saturday, 11th, April, 1964

Some of our Juveniles plus our new City Boys team went to the Scotland V England match at Hampden Park and saw a Scottish victory thanks to an Alan Gilzean headed goal. The club ran a bus and took girl friends with them to Glasgow. The girls went shopping and the boys carried on to Hampden Park on a wet afternoon. Ian Marnoch made one of the memorable statements on that journey. We were in Castle Street, Glasgow and the bus pulled up along side a bread delivery van. Ian wrapped a Scottish Flag over his head like a headscarf, leaned out the bus window and shouted  “ I am the mother in Mothers Pride, you know” He brought the house down. It was a great pity that Ian Marnoch’s style of play was not suited to our style, because he was a likeable giant.

Wednesday, 15th, April, 1964  V  Caputh United ( League  Home )

Letham should get the points. Caputh will give their opponents a hard fight.

Letham  4   Caputh United  0

Caputh held Letham to a no scoring draw at half-time but after the interval Letham took command and finished worthy winners.

Saturday, 18th, April,1964  V  IES ( 2nd. Rd. Dewar Shield  Away )

Letham to beat IES

Team from- Barclay, Clement, Campbell, Crockart, Paterson, Crichton, McClelland, McErlain, Hill, Muckersie, Moir and Wilkie

IES  1   Letham  4

Letham had a grand win over IES and with this fine young side could go places.

Letham  6   St Johns YC  1

Letham had an easy passage into the semi final at the expense of St Johns and now meet Royal United

Saturday, 25th, April, 1964  V  Allanvale ( Semi final Bissett & Stewart Cup – Away )

Letham travel to Blackford where they will find the home side all out to make up for their two semi final defeats. The Perth boys are capable of serving up grand football and will give the homesters a hot 90 minutes. However, Allanvale are the more experienced side and their two unexpected defeats will make them go all out for advancement.

Team from—Barclay, Paterson, Clement, Crichton, Crockart, Campbell, McErlain, McClelland, Moir, Muckersie, Hill and Wilkie

Allanvale  5   Letham  3

Letham’s young team put up a great display at Blackford but the home side just deserved to win, as they were better suited to the heavy conditions

Tuesday, 28th, April, 1964  V  Pitfour ( League—Home )

Letham  1     Pitfour  2

Saturday 2nd, May, 1964  V  Royal United  ( Semi final Gillie Cup – Away )

The tie of the day looks to be the meeting of Royals and Letham. Royals with the more experienced side start favourites and should make the final

Royal United  3     Letham  1

Royals merited their win. They were much too crafty and experienced for this young Letham side.

Tuesday, 5th, May, 1964  V  IES ( League—Away )

IES  0    Letham  1

Letham scraped through by the odd goal against IES who played the greater part of the game with two injured players but never gave up. They deserved a point.

Thursday, 7th, May, 1964  V Ruthvenvale  ( League—Away )

Ruthvenvale  1    Letham  6

Letham had an easy win at Auchterarder and they had a nap hand to show for it

Saturday, 9th, May, 1964  ( Semi final Dewar Shield – Away )

Letham travel to Glencarse in the other leg. The sides are well matched. The home boys are much the heavier side and this could be a great advantage against the young Letham boys, but it will certainly be a tie worth seeing.

Team—Barclay, Paterson and Clement, Crichton, Crockart and Campbell, McErlain, McClelland, Hill, Muckersie and Wilkie

Pitfour  0    Letham  3

There was no match report but this was a tremendous result.

Tuesday, 12th, May, 1964  V  Earnside ( League – Away )

Earnside  0    Letham  8

The big win for Letham speaks for itself.

Stewart Murray our goalkeeper from the first season was married to Marjory Dickie in Scone Parish Church.  Stewart who was a fine keeper lost his place to young Kenny Barclay

Tuesday, 19th, May, 1964  V St Leonard’s ( League—Home )

Letham  3    St Leonard’s  0

Saturday, 6th, June, 1964  V RN Anchorage  ( Final  Dewar Shield—South Inch )

Letham  3  R N Anchorage  3

Letham just made it in the last thirty seconds to get a replay. There was not time to centre the ball. The final should have been won early on when RN held a two-goal lead. RN’s substitute keeper who has been in action for two games could be blamed for the first and last goals. Letham’s good football earned them another chance. Referee was Marmara with Messrs Young & Ewing as linesmen.

Johnny McErlain, Letham’s outside right is reported to be very ill in Bridge of Earn Hospital with internal trouble. This was a bad blow as Johnny had been a great asset to the team with his pace, power and goal scoring abilities following his transfer in from St Leonard’s. It was subsequently revealed that he had serious kidney problems.

Letham’s leading scorer was Bob Muckersie with 41 goals. This was a great achievement when you consider Bob had to stand on the sidelines when Sandy McRorie and Kenny Marshall were in the side before their promotion to St Johnstone. Never the less Bob was a very fine player but some of his missed chances were legendary.

Wednesday, 10th, June, 1964  V R N Anchorage ( Final replay Dewar Shield—Simpson Park )

Letham  3    R N Anchorage  2

The replay of the Dewar Shield final at Simpson Park was a ding-dong battle. Despite the weather, a good crowd watched a real cup-tie dual. Letham on their second half display, just deserved to get their odd goal win. RN fell away in the second half and let the young Letham side get on top, yet if their forwards had not fiddled around neat goal, plus some close passing, they could easily have gone ahead.
Mr W H Croll, presented the Shield to the winning captain Sandy Crockart

One recalls a certain Kenny Marshall, professional with St Johnstone running on to the pitch to congratulate Bob Muckersie who had first timed a sweet pass from Marek Zieba to score Letham’s third goal and again on conclusion of the match. He was most certainly sober but was unable to control his delight. Bob recalls that after the stampede to congratulate him he managed to crawl out between the legs and watch the celebrations.

So came the end of Season 1963/1964. Ken Drummond made mistakes in his first year as manager, but he kept to his principles of playing push and run football. There were highs like winning the Dewar Shield for the second year on the trot and beating Allanvale who were to become league champions 5-0. We did however suffer a big defeat at Blackford by 7-2 and neither were we able to beat our great city rivals Royal United. The 15 goal hammering of Ruthvenvale was to be a club record for many years. Bob Muckersie also held the goal scoring record of 41 goals for many a long year.  Major changes had taken place from the championship winning side of the previous season in that the backbone of that side had moved up to a higher grade of football or had to give up the game. However they did play GRAND Football as described by Peter Reid the Association secretary. Some of his reporting that is copied verbatim left a lot to be desired. It was interesting to note that of the four founding fathers—viz:- Ken Drummond, Bill Hebner, Syd Lee and Trevor Pritchard that none at the end of the season were playing for the team. Only Ken & Bill were still actively involved in the management of the club. Sandy Crockart took over the captaincy from Bill. The young keeper Kenny Barclay together with Tommy Clements and Ally Campbell all established themselves in the team. All were under 18 years of age. Dennis Crichton who had been promoted from our own City Boys team grabbed his opportunity and played like a veteran. Johnny Paterson, Kenny Hill and Dusty Moir all showed great promise. Ronnie McClelland played in nearly all the matches but was moved around to accommodate the youngsters. He was to play a different role the following season as along with Ken they were going to the SFA coaching school at Inverclyde, Largs to study coaching methods. Wee BrianWilkie was very speedy and Kenny Hill was a joy to watch. While not the bravest of players he had great vision and one of the best long passer’s of the ball that the club had until then or even in the future

John Binnie leading right-wing player with Letham Rovers is going to Letham.  Bill Hebner and Ken Drummond after long discussions with John’s father convinced him that coming to Letham Juveniles would better John’s chances of advancement rather than resign for Rovers.  Not only that we were very concerned about the future of Johnny McErlain. To say that Rovers were pleased would be an understatement.

Not a lot of people know that at the start of the season we had the signature of Eddie Loughton. Eddie regrettably had also signed for R N Anchorage and we did not dare rock the boat. Pity as he was a fine player and went onto sign junior forms with Jeanfield Swifts
