Billy McManus who signed for St Johnstone on July,1967 decided to go full-time on Monday. Mr W Ormond said that he hoped to have talks with Billy Beatson this week, with a view to his going full-time. Beatson is one of a few players left on the Muirton staff.

Wednesday,20th, August,1969

Letham drawn in League Cup section D with Bridgeton United, Vale of Earn, and Scone Thistle.

Saturday,23rd, August,1969  V  Vale of Earn ( League Cup-Home )

The Letham V Vale of Earn fixture is the game of the day. On the strength of their Scottish Cup performances, the visitors should get the points, but knowing the home boys, who have plenty of good football, the Vale defence could be in for an uncomfortable afternoon. I take the visitors to make it but a reverse decision would not be surprising.

Letham  1  Vale of Earn  2

Vale managed to get through by the odd goal against Letham on a pitch unsuitable for good football. The Vale missed chances in the first half but the Letham boys showed up better after the turn round and were unlucky not to get on level terms.

Team from- Findlay, Mitchell, Tainsh, Fenton, Hamilton, McPherson, Brown, Whytock, Campbell, Forret, O’Donnell, Doherty, Henry, Stewart, Thomson.

Scone Thistle  1  Letham  1

This was the first notification in the PA of signed players for this season. Notable was that Jake Findlay moved straight from our Minor team to the Juveniles. Such was the regard we had for Jake’s ability. Sadly we did not take on board some of the very talented youngsters from our own City Boy team. We had however to allow Alan Garvie have his influence on the team and performance. He had impressed us whilst with PYC and was a very fine winger in his day. He had originally been signed by Dundee United in fact he told us he signed for United the same day as the legendary Ron Yeats who later found fame at Liverpool under Bill Shankly.

Saturday,6th, September,1969  V  Roselea ( League Cup-Away)

The meeting of Roselea and Letham on No. 10pitch should be a real hard tie and I would nort care to name the winners. It looks a good draw.

Team from- Findlay, Mitchell, Tainsh, Fenton, Hamilton, McPherson, Brown, Campbell, Forret, O’Donnell, Doherty, Henry, Stewart, Thomson, Mackinnon,

An under 18 Juvenile Select are to play Letham FC in a benefit game. Secretary Morrison has advised the Association secretary that St Johnstone Manager, Willie Ormond has agreed to let them have the use of Muirton Park on Tuesday, October 7th with a 7.30 kick off. The Select Team will be chosen on Sunday. The benefit game is for Martin Joyce who had a severe leg break. (fractured tibia)

Headline in the press

SCHOOLBOY SIGNS FOR VILLA

Jack Findlay a 15-year-old pupil at Blairgowrie high School, has signed for English Second Division club Aston Villa, managed by Scot, Tommy Docherty.
Jack, a goalkeeper with Perth Letham Juveniles played in a closed-door trial for the club at Ballieston, Glasgow on Sunday and was asked to go down to Villa Park for talks. He played another trial for the club and was promptly signed.
Formerly with Letham Minors he has played only half a dozen games for the Juveniles.
Jack who signed a form, which will still allow him to play Juvenile football, will probably join Villa at Christmas when he leaves school.

Jake in fact played the trial at Maryhill Juniors ground, which was a cinders pitch. He was accompanied by Ken Drummond and Mathews from Blairgowrie who was the Villa Scout. Man in charge at the trial was the Irish International Peter Doherty. Jake was his usual immaculate self. He was tall for his age and I remember he had enormous sized hands. Even when in our Minor Team he was able to lift the ball up one handed and place down for a goal kick. He had an unique talent and we were delighted for him. Letham as a club as a norm had good goalkeepers but Jake was exceptional. We all ways held the opinion he was far better than Jimmy Blyth who played for Roselea Minors even allowing a few years on that Jimmy Blyth played for Scotland. Not sure but we believe Jake was recognised by Scotland at a lower level. He is held up with great admiration by Letham as not only was he an outstanding talent but he was quiet and unassuming. A credit to the club and to his parents and Blairgowrie. Well worth the time Ally McAdam and Ken Drummond spent at his house advising him that he should sign for Letham. Thankfully his dad in particular was happy for his son to come and play in Perth. He was to become one of the few Letham players who we could say made the grade as a professional footballer and only serious back problems hindered his career.

Saturday,27th, September,1969  V  Roselea ( League Cup-Home)

In the meeting of Letham and Roselea, plenty of good football should be seen and the result close.

Team from- Findlay, Cameron, Mitchell, Tainsh, Fenton, Hamilton, McPherson, Mackinnon,Brown, Campbell, Whytock, Forret, Stewart, O’Donnell, Doherty, Henry, Thomson.

Letham  4  Roselea  0

The meeting of Letham and Roselea produced some attractive football. The ‘Lea had plenty of chances but their finishing was weak.

Under 18 Select team to play Letham in the Martin Joyce Benefit game at Muirton Park on Tuesday,7th, October,1969

Reserves in attendance- Duff-Bridgeton Utd, Cassidy-Roselea, Little-Strathearn Rovers, and Hamilton-Roselea
Letham  6  Perthshire Select  3

The game ended with a good win for the Letham Boys. The finishing of the Select forwards in the second half left a lot to be desired.

Saturday,4th, October,1969  V  Stanley ( 1st. Rd. Scottish Cup-Home)

Letham face up to the undefeated Stanley who have some former faces in their ranks.

Team from- Findlay, Cameron, Mitchell, Tainsh, Fenton, Hamilton, McPherson, Brown, Campbell,Forret, O’Donnell, Doherty, Henry, Stewart

Letham  2  Stanley  5

The big surprise of the day was the defeat of Letham by newcomers Stanley who certainly deserved their win. They scored in the first minute of the game and at one time led 4-0. The Letham boys were not lying down and scored two quick counters. Then they hit the visitor’s defence with everything in their power but they frittered away good chances. Shortly before the end the home side had a player sent off. Just after that, the visitors made it a nap hand with another great goal.

We again fell to the tactics adopted especially by Stanley and Pitfour of not allowing Letham to play football because if they did we would win. The problem being also that we encouraged young players to come through the age groups to us and that inevitably we had not the hardness of older players who quite frankly were going nowhere.
Saturday,11th, October,1969

A private trial has been arranged for tomorrow ( Sunday) for the Under 18 Select. The players and officials travelling should report to the Letham Juveniles clubroom at 2.00p.m.

Saturday,11th, October,1969  v  Pitfour ( League-Home )

Letham face the undefeated Pitfour and this looks an all active game. The home side slumped last week in the Scottish Tie to Stanley whose tactics upset them. They will be hoping for a better result today, but I am afraid they will find the Glencarse boys have too much experience to be overtaken.

Team from- Cameron, Mitchell, Tainsh, Fenton, Hamilton, McPherson, Brown, Campbell, Forret, O’Donnell, Doherty, Henry, Stewart.

Letham  0  Pitfour  4

Pitfour hit Letham for four without replay and on this form look the team of the season.

Wednesday,15th, October,1969

Tangerine 200  Week 38   Winning number-16

Saturday,18th, October,1969  V  St Columba’s ( League-Away)

St Columba’s face Letham on Pitch No. 7 and this should be a close result with perhaps both teams sharing the points

Team from- Cameron, Mitchell, Fenton, Tainsh, Hamilton, McPherson, Brown, Campbell, Forret, O’Donnell, Doherty, Henry, Stewart.

St Columba’s  1  Letham  0

St Columba’s fully deserved their win over the Letham side who could not break down the Saints strong defence in which keeper Duff, deputy for the day played a great part.

Saturday,25th, October,1969

The club organise a bus to go to Glasgow for the League Cup Final between St Johnstone and Celtic at Hamden Park. The bus was supplied by Walter Alexander & Sons but due to the great demand for buses actually came from their Cupar depot. Sadly Saints lost 1-0 to an early goal, which was scored just as we were approaching the turnstiles.

Mr Ormond, manager of St Johnstone F C  announced that he has signed 15-year-old schoolboy
Ross Jenkins on a “S” form. Ross was a super young lad from Dunning who was currently playing for our City Boy side having progressed from our Minors His mother was a very enthusiastic supporter of the club and this was much appreciated.

Luncarty Juniors sign Donald ( David ) Mitchell.

Saturday,1st, November,1969  V  Pitfour ( League-Away)

The Pitfour V Letham fixture has had to be cancelled as the city club are unable to field a team due to unforeseen circumstances, injuries etc. This is a real blow to the Letham officials, as at one time they had a playing staff of 20. Rule 24 has been carried out.

Saturday,8th, November,1969  V  CSSA ( League-Home)

Letham and CSSA meet on No.8 pitch, their home ground. Both sides have still to get their first point of the season so today’s tussle will be full of interest. The Letham side may still be understrength due to injuries and this should give CSSA the advantage. Both sides may settle for a point each.

Team from- Cummings, Cameron Todd, Kellock, Hamilton, Mackinnon, McPherson, Brown, Campbell, Forret, O’Donnell, Doherty, Henry, Stewart, Tainsh, Fenton.

Letham  2  CSSA  2

In the only division one fixture of the day both Letham and CSSA picked up their first point of the season.

Saturday,15th, November,1969  V  Scone Thistle ( League-Away)

The Thistle have Letham as visitors who all ways give the home boys a grand game and today should be no exception. Form of course points to the Thistle getting through.

Team from- Cummings, Todd, Kellock, Hamilton, McPherson, Mackinnon, Brown, Forret, O’Donnell, Doherty, Henry, Campbell,Tainsh, Stewart

Scone Thistle  4  Letham  1

Scone finished easy winners

Saturday,22nd. November,1969  V  Vale of Earn ( League-Home)

Another disappointing side this year has been Letham who have Vale from Crieff as visitors. It is all ways a grand contest when these sides meet and I will be surprised if it is otherwise today. Vale ought to come off best.

Letham  1  Vale of Earn  1

The meeting of Letham and Vale of Earn ended all square. The home side were certainly the more football minded and finished a wee bit unlucky not to win both points. The visitors missed some snips in the first half. Altogether a very keen struggle

Saturday,29th, November,1969  V  Craigie ( League-Away)

The meeting of Craigie and Letham on no.10pitch should be a grand tussle with perhaps an odd goal win either way.

Team from- Cummings, Todd, Kellock, Hamilton, McPherson, Mackinnon, Brown, Campbell, Fenton, Menzies, O’Donnell, Doherty, Tainsh, Stewart, D Tait

Saturday,6th, December,1969  V  St Columba’s ( League-Home)

Letham have St Columba’s on No. 7 pitch and the meeting should be worth seeing. Both sides have two points each and have scored the same amount of goals although the home side have the better average. Letham will be all out to avenge their earlier 1-0 defeat and I take them to get their first league win.

Tangerine 200  Section 1  Week No. 46   winning No. 46
Section 2   Members please note first collection this week

We had been canvassing hard in the Letham scheme to increase membership of our money spinning Tangerine Club. We had a brilliant introduction letter a copy regrettably lost in history encouraging people to pay 2/6 ( Twelve and half pence ) per week to a collector. Wattie Morrison was the promoter and a collector. We also now had Bill Younger as a collector. We were now working hard on to get a membership for Section 3 and 4. Each section was for 200 members.Ken Drummond utilised his special canvassing team which he employed on his Littlewood Pools business. We have records of the books kept by Bill Hebner at that time who was the overall treasurer.

St Columba’s again defeated Letham by the only goal scored. The form of the home side must be causing concern to their officials.

Saturday,27th, December,1969  V  CSSA ( 1st. Rd. Gillie Bros. Cup-Away)

No.8 pitch rivals meet on their own ground and the result looks wide open. In their previous league game they finished all square, but today I fancy The Tangerines. Secretary Morrison is asked to note that should Letham win today they will travel to Coupar Angus on Saturday, 3rd. January for the second round and this will cancel their league fixture against Pitfour.

Saturday,3rd. January,1970  v  Coupar Angus ( 2nd. Rd. Gillie Bros. Cup-Away)

Coupar Angus have Letham at Foxhall Park in the Gillie Bros Cup and there should be plenty of good football from both sides. The visitors are finding it hard to field a full strength team just now and if they can manage to do so today, I would take them to finish winners. The home boys have certainly ground advantage and they will endeavour to make this pay off, but I will be surprised if the club don’t get at least a replay.

Team from- Cummings, Todd, Kellock, Fenton, Tainsh, Hamilton, McPherson, Brown, Campbell, O’Donnell,Newman, White, Stewart,Newman

A last minute spot kick saw Letham get the odd goal win at Foxhall Park.

Saturday,10th, January,1970  V  St Johns ( League-Home)

On form St Johns should get both points but ground conditions at present could easily upset the best of teams

Team from- Cummings, Todd, Kellock, Fenton, Hamilton, McPherson, Brown, Campbell, Stewart, O’Donnell, White, Newman, Tainsh, Menzies.

All fixtures cancelled due to ground conditions

Saturday,17th, January,1970

Wednesday,21st, January,1970

No listings for the Tangerine Club

We delivered one of our good selling leaflets through a police inspector’s door. Wattie Morrison was summoned to the police station and advised that our Tangerine Club was illegal because all members did not get a vote. This coupled with the fact that we advised members that we would snowball prizes. We had intended once we had a 1000 members to have a prize of a new car. It was not to be and we had to close down operations. This was tragic news as thanks to the Tangerine Club we had become very wealthy and able to afford new strips and fund all our teams without the officials especially Ken Drummond funding the club out of their own pockets

Saturday,24th, January,1970  V  Pitfour ( League-Away)

Undefeated Pitfour have Letham as visitors and will be hoping to complete the double. They certainly have the craft to do this despite the fight that I am sure the Perth boys will put up.

Saturday,14th, February,1970  Vale of Earn ( 2nd.Rd. Andy Lumsden Cup-Home)

It should be a great tie on pitch No. 8. The home side may have a new face in their line up which could make all the difference, but they are up against a stuffy Crieff side, which will be keen to get on the winning road again. This tie may require a replay.

Team from- Cummings, Todd, Kellock, Newman, Hamilton, McPherson, Brown, Campbell, Fenton, Stewart, White, Tainsh, A N Other.

Game off - Due to ground conditions

CSSA withdraw from league. This made the possibility of relegation a distinct possibility.

At Market Park the Vale had two goals to spare in getting both points at the expense of Letham.

Saturday,21st, March,1970  St Johns ( League-Home)

Letham  1  St Johns  6

Dark days indeed. We just could not get a blend because we had good players. Relegation was now a distinct possibility. I remember Wattie in particular and Alan was beside themselves.

Saturday,28th, March,1970  V  Pitfour ( League-Away)

Pitfour at home to Letham should have no difficulty in getting the points.

The Letham protest against Roselea was upheld and a replay has been ordered

Saturday,4th, April,1970  V  Roselea (Quarter-final Gillie Bros. Cup-Away) (replay after protest)

Letham and Roselea meet in the protest tie, which should add up to quite an attractive fixture. At present ‘Lea are in top form but while the Letham boys looked more like the side of old when they were unlucky against Pitfour last week

Roselea  1  Letham  1

The protest tie between Roselea and Letham ended all square and this was a fair result. Both sides had their chances but failed. McPherson, Letham’s centre-half was easily the best defender on view
This was the same McPherson (Hammie) who started off with Letham back in 1960 as a centre forward but moved on after season 1962/63. All credit to Wattie who saw his potential as a central defender

Saturday,11th, April,1970  V  St Johnstone ( 1st. Rd. Dewar Shield-Home )

Letham should get through with something to spare.

Team from- Cummings, Todd, Tainsh, Davidson, Hamilton, McPherson, Brown, Campbell, Fenton, Stewart, O’Donnell, White, Jackson, Joyce, Kellock.

Letham  3  St Johnstone  1

The young Saints put up a good show against Letham

Wednesday,15th, April,1970  V  St Johns ( League-Away)

Saints and Letham meet tonight on pitch No. 7 and will be a thriller. Saints cannot afford to drop a point, while Letham are all out to escape relegation, will be on their toes and hoping to get at least a point to put them just ahead of Craigie whom they meet on Saturday.

Team from- Cummings, Todd, Tainsh, Davidson, Beatson, McPherson, Campbell, Brown, Fenton, Stewart, Hamilton, White, McAllister, O’Donnell, Joyce, Newman, Jackson.

St Johns  2  Letham  1

St Johns defeated Letham by the odd goal in three. This defeat puts Letham to the bottom on goal average.

Letham to be relegated was unthinkable. Ken discussed with Wattie if he could provide any financial incentives. Wattie quite rightly said he was sure the players pride and ability would see them through. I must admit at the time I did not share his optimism. However, I bought a case of beer as a reward if they defeated Craigie and avoided the ignominy of the drop.

Saturday,18th, April,1970  V  Craigie ( League-Away)

The meeting of Craigie and Letham on No.10 pitch is a vital occasion for both clubs in the relegation zone, with the result wide open. I would not care to give a forecast here, but the home side are due a change of luck and it could turn today. However they will have to improve their finishing off their fine outfield play. Letham display grand football but their finishing too is suspect.

Team from- Cummings, Todd, Tainsh, Beatson, McPherson, Campbell, Stewart, Hamilton, White, McAllister, O’Donnell, Joyce, Brown, Kellock, Jackson, Davidson, Fenton.

Craigie  1  Letham  2

Peter Reid had no comment in the PA. This however was a great result for the club.

Saturday,25th, April,1970

Free Day as Scotland  V  England at Hampden Park

Wednesday,29th, April,1970  V  St Columba’s ( League-Home )

This game could finish all square.

Team from- Cummings, Todd, Tainsh, Beatson, McPherson, Campbell, Brown, Stewart, Jackson, O’Donnell, White, McAllister, Joyce, Hamilton.

Letham  1  St Columba’s  0

This result meant Craigie was relegated with 3 points. Second bottom were St Columba’s with 6 points

Saturday,2nd. May,1970  V  Roselea ( Quarter-Final replay, Gillie Bros. Cup- Home)

Team from- Cummings, Todd, Tainsh, Brown, McPherson, Campbell, Jackson, Hamilton, White, O’Donnell, Stewart

Letham  0  Roselea  3

Wednesday,13th, May,1970  V  Stanley ( 2nd. Rd. Dewar Shield- Home )

Team from- Cummings, Todd, Tainsh, Newman, McPherson, Newman, Campbell, Brown, Newman, Hamilton, White, O’Donnell, Stewart,

Letham  3  Stanley  0

Letham finished grand winners against Stanley who made all the running in the first half and were unlucky to be one down at half-time. Missed chances cost them dearly. The second half saw the local side display grand football while the visitors became demoralised. Ian Lennon was booked

. Wattie now had the opportunity to sign some of our successful City Boy players and keep them within the Letham organisation.

Saturday,16th, May,1970

There was an Under 18 International Youth Tournament match being played at Muirton Park between Belgium and Rumania. Ken Drummond and Ally McAdam attended in the hope of assessing the standard of talent and the coaching methods.

Wednesday,27th, May,1970 ( Semi-Final Dewar Shield- Home )

Team from- Cummings, Todd, Tainsh, Brown, Melley, McPherson, Campbell, Rylance, Jenkins, Cormack, Stewart, Falconer, Hamilton, O’Donnell, White, Angus, Thompson

Letham  2  Craigie  1

Letham made the final of the Dewar Shield by an own goal scored by the Craigie left back. They were streets ahead in football ability however and in the first half only great saves by Middleton in the Craigie goal and bad luck deprived them of at least a three-goal lead. When both the other goals were scored the defences were caught napping. The winners were strong in defence where as Craigie were weak. McPherson the centre half of Letham was the most polished defender on view. Brown of Letham was booked

Saturday,30th, May,1970  V  Pitfour ( Final, Dewar Shield )

Letham  0  Pitfour  2

This was a great game with the Glencarse boys winning the first of the major trophies. Two quick goals in the first half settled the issue. Letham came more in to the game in the second half but missed chances plus coming up against a grand Pitfour defence, who made good use of the offside trap.
Mr I McCowan of Dewars presented the Shield to Charles Laing, the winning captain.

So ended a disappointing season. All credit for reaching a final but one could not but think that this team under achieved. Of course we lost players early and mid season to the Seniors and Juniors but we just had to accept these difficulties. Avoiding relegation was probably the most satisfying result because it was unthinkable that a club of Letham’s standing should play its football in a lower division.
