Newburgh Juveniles admitted to the Association. Craigie who were relegated were by vote re-elected to the First division.

Wednesday,12th, August,1970

Wattie was elected President of the Scottish Juvenile F.A at the A.G.M. in Aberdeen on Saturday,8th, August,1970 having served three years as Vice President.

This was a great honour for the club. Wattie, of course, through hard work thoroughly deserved the accolades and the club by appointing Team Managers tried to alleviate his workload. Recognition of the club was now at a national level rather than just the local association. As far as we can ascertain Wattie was the first Perthshire man to achieve the presidency and as fate would have it many years later the club was to provide yet another National President. In 1970 therefore Letham Juveniles through Wattie Morrison had a very high profile. The committee hoped however with Wattie’s input naturally was not his usual due to the Presidency that the under Manager would at least save the club from the trauma of yet again fighting relegation for a third year.

Saturday,15th, August,1970

Billy McManus plays for St Johnstone against Aberdeen at Pittodrie on Wednesday,12th, August,1970 at right back.
On the same day Pat Joyce was a star for the reserves in the return fixture at Muirton Park

Saturday,22nd. August,1970  V  Newburgh Juveniles ( League-Away)

Letham travel to meet newcomers Newburgh, who will be all out to make their presence felt in Juvenile football. The visitors are at all times a great footballing side and unless the home boys have some hidden talent in their ranks, I cannot see them upsetting the Perth side.

John O’Donnell signs for Jeanfield Swifts. This would be a blow to the club losing John at this stage of the new season. John had strength and power and these attributes we not easily found in other players.

Saturday,19th, September,1970  V  Craigie ( League-Away )

Craigie have the league leaders on No. 10 pitch and Letham will be all out to make up for conceding a point last week. Unless the home side strike better form, The Tangerine Boys are reckoned to finish on the winning side

Team from- Cummings, Campbell, Todd, Tainsh, Rylance, Beatson, Christie, Duff, Cowie, J Hamilton, Scott, Melley, D Hamilton, Walker.

Craigie  2  Letham  3

Letham just made it by the odd goal against Craigie who showed better form.

Saturday,26th, September,1970  V  Stanley ( League-Home )

The fixture of the day should be the meeting of Letham and Stanley on No. 8 pitch. The home boys form in their two previous games has been poor, but they have a reputation of rising to the big occassion. While having a sneaking fancy for The Tangerines, the reverse result would be no surprise.

Team from- Cummings, Todd, Campbell, Tainsh, Rylance, Beatson, Christie, Duff, Walker, Cowie, J Hamilton, Scott, Melley

Letham  2  Stanley  0

Letham played the better football to get both points from Stanley. McConnell of Stanley picked up his third caution of the season.

Letham  7  St Johns  0

Letham had the North Inch saints as visitors and ran out very easy winners. This was the saint’s second big defeat in a row and they are sliding far down the table. It looks as if drastic changes are needed if they are to be in with a chance of silver.

Strathearn Rovers  2  Letham  2

At Crieff the meeting of Rovers and league leaders Letham finished all square. This was a good performance by the local side.

Saturday,14th, November,1970  V  Stanley ( 1st. Rd. Brotherhood Cup-Away)

The tie of the day must surely be at Stanley, where the local side have Letham as visitors. The game should be full of thrills up to the final whistle. As for the result, I would not care to make a forecast as both teams are capable of getting through. But with home advantage, the home side are certainly in with a great chance.

Stanley  5  Letham  3

The tie of the day saw Stanley finish good winners over Letham. Reports say this was a grand game with the result just about right.

Sayurday,21st, November,1970  V  St Columba’s ( League-Home )

In the only league game of the day, the TANGERINE Boys had another good win to remain still undefeated. Their linesman was relieved of his duties in the second half and has been reported

Saturday,28th, November,1970  V  Craigie ( 1st. Rd. Gillie Cup-Away )

On the South Inch Letham should have an easy win.

Team from- Cummings, Todd, Beatson, Campbell, Christie, Duff, Melley, J Hamilton, Tainsh,
 D Hamilton, Cowie, Newman.

Craigie won over Letham as Letham failed to appear.

Ken Drummond was in charge for this game as Wattie was away on Scottish business. The team was stripped and on the way down Scott Street for the match when the Park Ranger advised us that all matches were off due to the frost conditions. Naturally, the players trooped back to the clubrooms in South Street. Imagine the anger and consternation when it was learned that Willie Young the match referee declared the pitch playable and with Craigie in attendance they eventually played a friendly with Roselea. Ken Drummond never ever forgave Craigie for their action. He was to be even angrier when the Perthshire committee decided to award the tie to Craigie.

Saturday,5th, December,1970  V  Roselea ( 1st. Rd. Dewar Shield-Away )

The meeting of ‘Lea and Letham should be the tie of the day and really worth seeing. Both teams are capable of making the second round as this tie goes ahead on pitch No. 7, there is no ground advantage. I would not care to make a forecast on this tie but the result should be close with perhaps a replay being required.

Letham  3  Roselea  3

Letham and Roselea again finished level in a tie in which Orange of the home side received his marching orders in the second half. Reports say that Letham led 3-0 at one time and were playing grand football, but the ‘Lea put in a great rally in the last 15 minutes to get a well deserved replay. Both sides were forced to make last minute changes. A McPherson of Roselea was booked.

Letham have lodged an appeal with the “Scottish” against the Association’s decision to award the first round Gillie Bros. Tie to Craigie, due to their failure to play this tie on the allocated day.

Saturday,26th, December,1970  V  Craigie ( League-Home )

Also listed in the P.A. was the following team. Cummings,Todd,Beatson,Rylance,Christie,Duff,Campbell, Melley,Orange,D Hamilton,J Hamilton

Letham  3  Craigie  1

Letham still undefeated in the league took another step towards the title when they defeated Craigie. They have reported that the kick off was delayed due to the late appearance of their opponents.

Letham report Craigie, which is a throwback to their claim against the club re the Gillie Cup tie on 28th,November,1970. The feud was to continue by Letham for many years to come.

Wednesday,30th,December,1970

Roselea have lodged a protest against Letham, claiming that their opponents fielded a player under an assumed name. Letham have asked that referee Crombie be cited to appear when the protest is heard.

Strathearn Rovers  1  Letham  0

At Braidhaugh Park, Crieff, the Rovers had the attractive Letham as visitors. Reports say the Perth side were unlucky to go down by the only goal of the game, spoiled by the gale.

Roselea’s protest against Letham was dismissed for lack of evidence. The protest fee was withheld.

Saturday,16th, January,1971  V  Newburgh Juveniles ( League-Home )

Team from- Cummings, Todd, Rylance, Beatson, Duff, J Hamilton, D Hamilton, Melley, Orange, Cowie, Newman.

Letham  3  Newburgh  0

Letham took a step nearer the Championship when they picked up two good points at the expense of Newburgh.

At the Scottish Juvenile Association meeting on Saturday,Letham F.C.’s appeal against the Perthshire Association to award the first round tie to Craigie due to failure to appear was dismissed and the appeal fee withheld.

The club was very aggrieved by this decision and as mentioned earlier we vowed that never again would we give any quarter to Craigie.

Postal strike commenced today,Wednesday,20th, January,1971. Nothing significant in the strike but Ken Drummond was laid low with an abscess in the nether region which allowed him the time to expand his Littlewoods Pools Collector Service and in time would provide finance to keep Letham Football Club operating.

Saturday,23rd, January,1971  V  St Johnstone ( League-Away )

St Johnstone faced up to Letham who I am afraid will prove far too much for them. It will indeed be a big surprise should Letham fail to increase their lead and goal average at the top.

Team from- Cummings, Campbell,Todd, Tainsh, Duff, Rylance, Beatson, Newman J Hamilton, Murray, Cowie, D Hamilton, Christie.

St Johnstone  0  Letham  11

Saints faced up to the undefeated Letham and were hit for eleven.

Letham who have only dropped two points this season look a good bet for the League Championship as they are at present eight points ahead of their nearest rivals-Roselea.

Saturday,30th, January,1971  V  Roselea ( 1st. Rd. 2nd.Replay-Dewar Shield South Inch Pitch 7 )

The Tangerines and Roselea do battle on No. 7 pitch in a wide-open tie. I would not care to forecast a result, as both sides are capable of getting through. Spectators can be sure of seeing top class football from both teams and a very close finish.

Team from- Cummings, Todd, Tainsh, Rylance, Beatson, Campbell, Duff, J Hamilton, Murray, Cowie, D Hamilton, Christie.

Match postponed due to weather conditions.

Saturday,6th, February,1971

As Letham have two players in the Scottish Juvenile under 18 Select they have been granted a free day this week. Match to be played at Ballieston, Glasgow. Best wishes to Tainsh and Cowie of Letham also Cameron of Strathearn Rovers.

Letham continually to supply young players to the National Association which is a compliment to the system but also for our desire to produce and advance the skills of these players. Interesting that no other teams in the league are able to produce these young players consistently. The drawbacks are that there is a penalty, as these youngsters have neither the strength nor experience of the more successful sides. A lot depends on how you measure success. Winning leagues and cups are not all ways the criteria. No other Juvenile Club could match the conveyor belt of talent going up the ladder to the Junior Grade or Senior Level.

Saturday,13th, February,1971  V  Roselea ( 1st. Rd. 2nd. Replay-Dewar Shield Shield- Pitch 7 )

There should be a close game between Letham and Roselea and it would be a brave man to forecast a final result.

Team from- Cummings, Todd, Tainsh, Rylance, Beatson, Campbell, Duff, Christie, J Hamilton, Murray, Cowie, D Hamilton, Orange. (Murray would be a misprint for Melley)

Letham  2  Roselea  0

Letham were worthy winners in the Dewar Shield tie. Roselea couldn’t match the football skill of their opponents and never at any time looked like saving the game.

The sequel to Letham’s win over Roselea is that the ‘Lea have lodged a protest which will be considered at the next meeting.

Saturday,20th, February,1971  V  Strathearn Rovers ( League-Home )

Rovers face up to the undefeated Letham on pitch No. 8.and will be hoping they can be the first side to lower the home boys colours. The teams finished all square at Crieff earlier in the season and this return fixture should be a real t5hriller. The visitors will certainly battle to the final whistle and can all ways be dangerous when chances crop up but they are not likely to get many today against a great defence. The “Tangerines” should still finish with a clean sheet.

Team from- Cummings, Campbell,Todd, Rylance, Beatson, Duff, Christie, J Hamilton, Tainsh, Cowie, D Hamilton, Newman, Orange, Newman

Letham  3  Strathearn Rovers  2

Strathearn were unlucky to lose both points against Letham. It was a goal five minutes from time, which won the day for the Perth lads.

Saturday,27th, February,1971  V  Scone Thistle ( League-Home )

Letham still unbeaten in the league entertain Thistle, whose form at present must be giving their officials some thought and I just can’t see them being the first team to lower the Tangerine colours.

Team from- Cummings, Campbell, Todd, Mason, Rylance, Beatson, Duff, Tainsh, Christie, J Hamilton, D Hamilton, Cowie, Orange, Newman.

Letham  5  Scone Thistle  0

Scone Thistle at no time looked as if they might be the first to lower Letham’s colours. Thistle’s form this season must be a keen disappointment to their hard working officials. Two players were booked, one from each side.

Saturday,6th, March,1971

End of postal strike

Saturday,6th, March,1971  V  Roselea ( League-Away )

The fixture on No. 10 Pitch should be a real thriller with Roselea all out to be the first side to give Letham their first league defeat. On present form, however, I can’t see the leaders record being ended.

Team from- Cummings, Campbell, Todd, Mason, Rylance, Beatson, Duff, Christie, Tainsh, J Hamilton, Orange, Cowie, D Hamilton.

Roselea  2  Letham  0

The’Lea defeated Letham who suffered their first reverse of the season. This was a most unexpected result as the home boys form in recent weeks has been none too good.

Saturday,13th, March,1971  V  Muirton ( League-Away )

Letham visit the North Inch and after their defeat last week will be all out to show this form was all wrong. I am afraid the home side will be unable to contain them.

Muirton  0  Letham  7

Letham visitors to the North Inch, made up for last week’s defeat by scoring an easy win against Muirton.

Roselea’s protest against Letham was upheld. Roselea now play Stanley in the second round.

Bridgeton United  3  Letham  4

League leaders Letham were visitors to Pitcairngreen and picked up two good points with an odd goal win in seven

League leaders Letham who have dropped only four points to date must surely be in with a great chance of the Championship. Their remaining fixtures are HOME- St Johnstone Juveniles and Roselea. The AWAY fixtures are Coupar Angus, St Johns, Huntingtower and Stanley.

Wednesday,24th, March,1971

The following clubs go forward to the Consolation Cup draw. Letham, Huntingtower, Muirton, Newburgh juveniles, St Johnstone Juveniles. Should Roselea lose to Stanley in the second round of the Dewar Shield they also will go into the hat.

Saturday,27th, March,1971  V  St Johnstone ( League-Home )

On present form Letham look good to get full points.
Team from- Cummings, Todd, Tainsh, Mason, Rylance, Beatson, Christie, J Hamilton, Melley, Cowie, Duff, D Hamilton, Orange.

The Tangerines took another step towards the championship with a good win over the Saints who were knocked for six without reply. Saints had a player booked.

Saturday,3rd, April,1971  V  Huntingtower ( League-Away)

The Tower have leaders Letham ass visitors and will give them a run for the points but at the finish The Tangerines should have both points safely tucked away.

Team from- Cummings, Todd, Campbell, Mason, Rylance, Duff, Orange, Cowie, Melley, J Hamilton, D Hamilton, Tainsh, Newman.

Huntingtower  1  Letham  8

Letham had a runaway victory over Huntingtower. The home boys played well up to the twenty-minute mark but then were hit with a three goal in three minutes burst. They managed to pull one back before half-time but after the restart the “Tangerines” hit them for a further five. This was real championship form by Letham. Letham’s big win on Saturday sees them topping the 100-goal mark for the league. They have only 22 against for the same number of games.

No Fixture

Saturday,17th, April,1971  V  St Johns ( League-Away )

The most attractive fixture of the day is the meeting of St. Johns and Letham on No. 2 pitch and with the Saints in better form recently they could give the leaders a real hard tussle for the points. The Tangerines will have to go all out to overcome the homeboys but they should finish on the right side.

St Johns  1  Letham  3

The meeting of St. Johns and Letham ended with the league leaders picking up two valuable points to put them in a good position for the title.

Wednesday,21st, April,1971  V  Coupar Angus ( League-Away )

Tonight’s fixture should be full of interest with both Letham and Roselea looking for the points against Coupar Angus and Huntingtower respectively. The Tangerines have the harder task and may get a surprise at Foxhall Park.

Coupar Angus  1  Letham  3

Both the challengers for the league had good victories.

Saturday,24th, April,1971  V  Roselea ( League-Home )

The fixture of the day must surely be the meeting of Letham and Roselea in the battle for the points towards the league title. Both sides have dropped four points this season and are at present in top form.

Letham  2  Roselea  2

In the battle for the league title, the top two teams finished all square. Reports say the first half was pretty even but after the interval Roselea had 80% of the play and missed some glorious chances.

Saturday,8th, May,1971  V  Stanley ( League-Away )

The fixture at Stanley is a vital one for Letham as this is the finish of their league fixtures for the title. They cannot afford to drop even a point with Roselea hard on their heels. Letham will certainly be the fresher side as the home team have had a heavy programme these past few weeks, but despite this, the Perth lads will have to be in top form to get through. I would not care to give a forecast of the result but here’s hoping it will be a sporting contest between two grand sides.

Stanley  3  Letham  2

At Stanley, The Tangerines just failed to get the point, which on play they should have gained. Although both sides missed their chances this was undoubtedly the best game seen this season at the home club’s ground. Letham’s defeat may cost them dearly as Roselea require only three points from two games to win the Championship against Scone Thistle and Strathearn Rovers.

This was a real heartbreak. Stanley of course got stuck in to Letham and would not allow them to settle down and play the style of football that was now their tradition. On ability alone the team deserved at least one point.

R McDonald of Roselea appointed the new Vice-President taking over from following the resignation of Mr. A Peebles of Huntingtower. Ricky of course in later years was to join Letham.

Dundee Select  3  Perthshire Select  1

Significant to note that Letham had four representatives and Roselea only one

Saturday,22nd, May,1971

Roselea defeated Strathearn Rovers 3-2 and therefore won the league. Scoring the winner four minutes in to time added on for time wasting.

Roselea                      26     22     2      2      105   39     46
LETHAM`                       26     21      2       3       115   29     45

All the players and committee were devastated. Especially Wattie Morrison who to be fair had produced a magnificent side. However due to the Craigie fiasco and other factors the team was unable to produce that little bit extra to win any of the cups neither were they able to reach even one final.

Wednesday,26th, May,1971  V  Huntingtower ( 1st. Rd. Consolation Cup-Away )

Team from- Cummings, Todd, Mason, Rylance, Beatson, Duff, Campbell, J Hamilton, Cowie, Melley, Tainsh, Orange.

Huntingtower  2  Letham  0

Huntingtower brought off the surprise of the season in beating Letham who missed from the spot. Reports say their win was well deserved.
This defeat must be heartbreak for the Letham officials who are now out of all the cups and were also pipped for league honours.

Interesting entries in Bill Hebner’s cashbook for the season were receipts for transfer deals viz-
£50.00 from St Johnstone on the 26th, October, 1970 and £5.00 each from Jeanfield Swifts (twice) and Luncarty Juniors. The Tangerine Club by far was the main source of income totalling a gross of £1064.12. Our equipment was at that time purchased from Lumley’s of Glasgow.
